I Cliff Dwellers del XXI° secolo

<Erano uomini> scriveva Lincoln Steffens <che non volevano un ufficio a meno che non fosse lassù dove l’aria è limpida e fresca, il panorama grandioso e stupendo, e dove c’è silenzio anche nel pieno dell’attività>
Le città aeree erano abitate da una nuova razza di uomini d’affari. In quel periodo li chiamavano i “Cliff dwellers”,a rievocare quelle tribù di nativi americani, antenati dei Pueblo, che vivevano in abitazioni situate nelle grotte dei canyon, a oltre centocinquanta metri di altezza.

Erano gli anni a cavallo tra la fine del 1800 e l’inizio del XX secolo, altri tempi direbbe qualcuno, tempi in cui vivere a centinaia di metri da terra poteva essere oltre che prestigioso anche conveniente.

Erano gli anni in cui l’aria era realmente limpida e fresca, e il panorama grandioso, non vi era una cortina di smog fotochimico che oggi irradia di oro marcio le grandi metropoli mondiali.
Non c’era un’inflazione spropositata di edifici prometeici che oggi ricreano l’ambiente metropolitano a livello di terreno, anche nei piani più alti, rendendo inutile la ricercata positiva solitudine e il silenzio, tanto decantati e voluti dai Cliff dwellers di fine XIX secolo.

Cosa resta ora a distanza di centocinquanta anni circa, di quei privilegi assegnati a pochi?
Cosa riserverebbero oggi Daniel Burnham, John Root, Louis Sullivan e i più illustri architetti di quel tempo, ai loro migliori committenti?
Di certo non punterebbero ai migliori attici nei più alti grattacieli della città, perché saprebbero che il più alto grattacielo che costruirebbero oggi, perderebbe entro pochi anni il primato dell’altezza ed entro pochi decenni l’immaginaria prestigiosa solitudine che fece dei cieli di Chicago, un esempio da seguire per decenni.

A noi oggi non stupiscono le grandi città americane che continuano la loro vertiginosa corsa per guadagnare centimetri verso il cielo, non ci stupiscono nemmeno le nuove city  (per lo più arabe) a caccia di prestigio urbano, in rapida crescita, emulanti il modello americano che per anni è stato simbolo di maestosità e forza.
Lo stupore nasce quando centri caratterizzati da un’antesignana forza culturale, decidono dopo un secolo e più di seguire un modello ormai oggi decisamente fallimentare.
Le grandi città europee preferiscono perdere la loro identità per abbracciare un modello che, (se potessero) abbandonerebbero le stesse metropoli americane pioniere di questo stile.

Milano, ultima a compiere questa trasformazione, sarà sconvolta entro pochi decenni da questo stile ormai passato.
Milano guidata in questa tarda corsa verso il cielo, da sedicenti architetti che ipocritamente fanno della sostenibilità un caduceo da impugnare per guadagnare credibilità.
Milano verrà sconvolta da uno stile costruttivo che è abbinabile alla sostenibilità ambientale come Hannibal Lecter può essere abbinato al veganesimo.

L’alternativa alla misoneista conservazione culturale di questo paese (Italia) non è, e non deve essere ricercata nell’emulazione di modelli esteri vecchi di secoli; modelli probabilmente adatti a determinati contesti e determinati periodi storici, ma il più delle volte venefici se riadattati con il solo scopo di ricreare lo stesso effetto che ha evoluto una determinata realtà urbana in passato.

L’ establishment architettonico nazionale ed europeo dovrebbe interrogarsi su tutto ciò, dovrebbe capire che per generare nuova linfa ed una nuova era culturale non si dovranno emulare modelli appartenenti ad altre epoche o altri contesti.
Fare ciò sarebbe deleterio tanto quanto conservare spasmodicamente un patrimonio culturale medioevale, cercando di annullare qualsiasi forma, idea o proposta di evoluzione edilizia.

Purtroppo le idee innovative non si originano dagli eccessivi fondi economici che alcuni governi riservano inspiegabilmente ad archistar visionariamente sterili.
Quando il jet set capirà che aggredire il cielo  con costruzioni prometeiche sarà demodè e dannoso per tutti, forse cercheranno nuove “frontiere” da riservare ai committenti più prestigiosi.
Innovative conquiste edilizie ci saranno, meno egotistiche e puerili, realmente adatte all’ambiente; non semplicemente sostenibili ma completamente fuse con la natura.

Quando questi signori capiranno che il futuro è sotto terra, forse questa nuova frontiera la sperimenteranno in maniera inconsapevole e purtroppo per loro… perpetua.

If you have registered on our website and have a valid support account, you can submit support tickets for assistance. Support form submissions are sent to our third party Ticksy ticketing system. Ticksy provides the support ticketing platform we use to handle support requests. The data they receive is limited to the data you explicitly provide and consent to being set when you create a support ticket. 7. How Long We Retain Your Data For
When you submit a support ticket or a comment, its metadata is retained until (if) you tell us to remove it. We use this data so that we can recognize you and approve your comments automatically instead of holding them for moderation. If you register on our website, we also store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except changing your username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
8. Security Measures
We use the SSL/HTTPS protocol throughout our site.
